Overview
TSG 1.3 will bring together congress participants who are interested in research related to the teaching and learning of Algebra at secondary and tertiary levels. This TSG aims to foster discussion of international perspectives, new insights, and research directions through consideration of key themes. We hope to engage a variety of scholars (including early career and established researchers) in high-quality presentations and critical discussions that capture the current state-of-the-art research and identify future research directions.
TSG 1.3 will operate as a mini conference with invited presentations and discussions. We welcome submissions based on empirical research, including ongoing studies, as well as theoretical contributions and reflections on a theme, across multiple themes or from another theme related to the teaching and learning of algebra.
Areas of interest
Themes of TSG 1.3 include, but are not limited to:
- Task design for algebra (e.g., affordances and constraints of tools and technologies; fostering understanding of algebraic structure; representations; supporting algebraic reasoning, understanding and proof; non-routine problems).
- Knowledge for teaching algebra (e.g., pedagogical content knowledge for teaching algebra; mathematical knowledge for teaching algebra; teaching with technology and tools; connections between secondary and tertiary mathematics).
- Student learning and understanding of algebra (e.g., student conceptions, difficulties, errors, or competencies; transitions between secondary and tertiary; moving from arithmetic to algebraic reasoning; assessing students’ understanding and algebraic thinking; use of technologies and tools).
